I just wanted to tell you all a little about our Zoom conference with SENATOR JOHNNY ISAKSON!
First off, it’s election season and Senator Isakson is the Republican incumbent representing Georgia in the Senate. Our students learned about his background and proposed questions to ask Senator Isakson. Two questions were chosen from each of our third grade classes and we got to ask them over a web cam (Zoom) conference. In our class, Caitlin and Matthew got to pose their questions to him. Caitlyn asked “Senator Isakson, what current bills facing education do you support? Have you ever written a bill?” Senator Isakson responded to tell us how important education is and that no matter if you go to a tech school, a college, or finish high school, being educated is very important. He also told us about some of the bills he helped write. Matthew asked, “Senator Isakson, which bills are you currently working on?” to which he responded about the Savannah River project to help increase jobs in GA. Senator Isakson also gave us an overview of GA’s Amendment 1, his first bills he wrote, current bills he is working on, and education. He told us a little about the Defense Authorization Bill, lowering taxes, and state’s rights.
He said something that stuck out to me and I had my students look over it and respond to what they thought it meant. Senator Isakson said “The better you read, the easier it is to learn.” We talked about how reading is the foundation of everything. Politics aside, your education can take you far. He stated that when he was young he worked various jobs, including being a waiter, he never thought that one day that he would be representing the state of Georgia in the Federal government.
You never know what opportunities that will come your way, I hope that our discussion with Senator Isakson is something that our students can remember forever.
By the way, my teacher heart was so full! The students were so respectful and attentive, they represented YES very well!
Way to go kiddos!
Special thanks to Lee Bane for setting this up for us and to Tonia Paramore for getting the cameras and logistics figured out! We are definitely #barrowbold
